The city council approved the Edgemoor team for the redevelopment of KCI after a 10-2 vote this afternoon. Councilmen Barnes and Taylor voted against the approval of Edgemoor. The city still needs to develop a memorandum of understanding with Edgemoor, but the once darkhorse design team seems assured to design and build a new KCI if voters approve the November 7 vote.
We believe a team made up of Kansas City design talent can provide the best design solution for a new KCI, but we also must have trust in our elected representatives that a fair process occurred and the team they feel could deliver the best project for the people of Kansas City was selected. We hope and trust that opportunities for collaboration with SOM and the Edgemoor team will present themselves to many of the great design firms that call Kansas City home. And, with that, we hope that a united front can begin to emerge to ensure that the critical vote in November passes. Without that, the losses felt by the other teams competing for KCI today, will be felt by businesses and residents across the city in November and for decades after.
So, find a way to stay engaged in the process, look for opportunities to ensure our collective design talents are utilized and vote yes for a better KCI and a better future for Kansas City.
